Referees

Referees play a key role in making soccer fair, safe, and enjoyable for everyone on the field. Whether you’re just starting or looking to move up through the levels, Alberta Soccer offers the training, resources, and support you need to grow as a confident and capable official.
Becoming a Referee
Refereeing is a rewarding way to stay active, support your community, and gain valuable life skills.
Whether you’re looking for a flexible part-time job or aiming to reach national or international levels, becoming a referee starts with the right course for your age and goals.
Alberta Soccer currently offers two entry points:
- Mini Referee: For those 12 years and older, officiating mini soccer matches.
- Entry Level: For those 14 years and older, leading to full-field officiating opportunities.
To register, visit RefCentre, choose your course, and complete the required pre-course modules. New course dates are added throughout the season, so check back often or contact your local district for support.
Referee Pathway
Referee education supports your journey at every level. From your first course to advanced development, Alberta Soccer provides the training and mentorship you need to grow with confidence.
From grassroots to the world stage. The Referee Pathway shows how officials can grow through training and experience, starting from Mini and Entry Level to District, Regional, and Provincial levels — and for some, all the way to FIFA.
Advancing through the pathway depends on performance, commitment, and education. Officials can move at their own pace, with plenty of support and mentorship available at every level. Whether you aim to officiate locally or on the world stage, there’s a path for you.
